Exploiting Virgin Olive Oil By-products Using Hydrodistillation

Abstract Virgin olive oil processing results in a large amount of biomass (leaves, pomace, stones and wastewater) during harvesting, pruning production. In recent years, these by-products have been studied as possible sources bioactive compounds, several techniques developed, including microwave, ultrasound, subcritical extraction, high hydrostatic pressure, pulsed electric field, high-voltage electrical discharge. However, can be expensive, may require specialized staff to implement them. Therefore, this study proposes novel method. Hydrodistillation is simple fast technique that recover valuable compounds from biomasses. As it uses water solvent, sustainable, does not harm the environment, compatible with industrial practice. This paper presents hydrodistillation experiment on leaves, pomace stones. Two fractions were obtained: “phytocomplex” fraction inside boiler, “hydrolate” condenser column. HPLC–DAD–MS GC–MS analyses characterized differentiated two fractions. general, more notably phenolic, recovered phytocomplex than hydrolate fraction. Total phenolic (mg tyr/ kg ) 11903.51, 4007.33, 2469.42 mg for stone, while they 67.67, 1.98, 29.05 , respectively. Furthermore, interesting typical Olea europaea L. found both matrices. The main families alcohols, secoiridoids flavonoids. particular, oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol leaves pomace. Finally, analysis revealed higher amounts volatile stone class esters, ketones, aldehydes, terpenes, phenols their derivatives. Graphical
